Class Details
Biologists have only recently learned to read the complete genome sequence of organisms, and figuring out how to interpret these “texts” is now the focus of much of contemporary research in molecular biology and genetics. This course will concentrate on the origin, function, and evolution of central features of eukaryotic genomes, including gene structure, genome size, repeated sequences, and the complexity of gene regulation. Students will develop the ability to evaluate the contribution of neutral and adaptive processes in shaping genome complexity through: (1) critical evaluation of the primary research literature, (2) investigation of genome structural variation using wet-lab approaches and publically available genomic data, and (3) an original research project..
