Class Details

This seminar will focus on the work of Manet through careful reading of critical and interpretive texts and close looking at his major paintings. His contributions as a draftsman and printmaker will be considered as well. Students will lead weekly discussions based on readings and focusing on single works of art, ever mindful of the complex social/political/cultural contexts in which Manet forged his version of modernism. Reading knowledge of French is required.

Grading: yes pass/fail option, yes fifth course option
Requirements/Evaluation: assignments will include several short papers, a term project, and a field trip to New York.
