This seminar will comprise direct engagement with seminal works of abstract art included in National Gallery collection show (Make It New: Abstract Painting from the National Gallery of Art, 1950-75, at the Clark through Oct.13); regular, close reading of historical, critical, and other expository texts that thematize abstraction; and, a selective probing of alternative or non-canonical contexts in the history of art which have proved congenial to abstract art practice.

Grading: no pass/fail option, no fifth course option
Requirements/Evaluation: Full attendance and participation; preparation and presentation of related ancillary materials, possibly more than once; a research paper of 25-30 pp. on a topic developed in consultation with the instructor
Extra Info: may not be taken on a pass/fail basis; not available for the Gaudino option
