Division I

Class Details

This class will investigate the possibilities that digital design techniques bring to the production of sculpture. What material forms are made available by modeling programs such as Rhino and by digital fabrication technologies? And, more profoundly, what modes of abstract thinking does this design process engage? Students will create sculptural forms through a process of inquiry, employing strategies such as the combination of unlike elements, analogous representation, or the parametric control of a form by an outside factor. The class will include a field trip to visit a local computer aided manufacturing facility and will culminate in an exhibition of the sculptures students have made throughout the term.
