Class Details
This seminar examines the development of a range of aesthetic theories and ideas developed in China from approximately 600 BCE through 1300 CE. Focusing on primary texts (in translation) dealing with such cultural practices as poetry, painting, calligraphy, music, and garden design, we will address a series of often interrelated issues: intentionality in artistic production, modes of learning and skill acquisition, the professional versus the amateur, spontaneity versus meticulous craft, originality versus imitation, the relationship between artistic production and morality, and the relationship between artistic production and the natural world. While much of our work will be on theoretical and critical texts, we will also compare the notions put forth in these approaches to specific artistic products.
All readings will be in English translation but the original Chinese texts will be made available to those who can read them. No previous knowledge of Chinese history, language, or literature is assumed.
