Class Details
In this course, we will read some of the key writers of Modernism, attentive to their aesthetic and thematic preoccupations and aversions, in order to provide a sketch of the many differences–historical, technological, and psychological–that characterize the period. Texts will likely include poems by Sterling Brown, T. S. Eliot, Langston Hughes, Gertrude Stein, Wallace Stevens and William Carlos Williams, as well as William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury, James Joyce’s Dubliners, Jean Toomer’s Cane and Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse.
