Class Details

This course focuses on the nature and function of narrative using a wide range of texts from different traditions and genres. We will analyze the ways in which some of the world’s best works of fiction, as well as other types of writing such as articles and blogs, make use of narrative to communicate their concerns, and we will accompany the readings with a few pertinent theoretical texts. The works of fiction may include stories from Antiquity, works by Cervantes, Austen, Gogol, Flaubert, Kafka, Zweig, and García Márquez. We will also read a selection of theoretical and critical texts. All readings in English, although those with foreign language competency are invited to make comparisons with the original where possible.
