Class Details
Independent for more than a millenium and the crossroads of trade between Europe and Asia, Venice created a unique architecture. The aqueous environment permitted the construction of a medieval city without walls, and the civil control enforced by the oligarchic government allowed unfortified private dwellings. We will consider examples of the city’s buildings, dating from the 1100s to the 1700s, such as Basilica of Saint Mark, Doge’s Palace, Ca’ d’Oro, Libreria di San Marco and Il Redentore.
