Class Details

Depicted as being incompatible with modernity, the fantastic has long been marginalized, but can hardly be repressed. This course examines the fantastic in modern Chinese fiction and film through its representation as the supernatural, the psychological, and the science fictional. It addresses the following questions: What is the fantastic? How is it engendered in a narrative? Do fantastic texts illuminate, interrogate, or subvert reality? What is the cognitive function of the fantastic genre in the age of modernity? Course materials include primary fictional/cinematic texts in conjunction with secondary materials on the intellectual-historical contexts. Students are also welcome to bring in cross-cultural comparison of the fantastic. This course adopts a quasi-tutorial format, by meeting as a class to clear comprehension issues, and meeting in tutorial pairs to engage in in-depth analysis. Through discussions, essays, and individual projects, it aims to enhance students’ Chinese language proficiency, and to enrich students’ critical understanding of Chinese cultural expressions. All primary readings, class discussions, and required writings are in Chinese. To facilitate understanding, secondary materials are in English. Conducted in Mandarin.
