This seminar will focus on the work of Manet through careful reading of critical and interpretive texts and close looking at his major paintings. His contributions as a draftsman and printmaker will be considered as well. Students will lead weekly discussions based on readings and focusing on single works of art, ever mindful of the complex social/political/cultural contexts in which Manet forged his version of modernism. Reading knowledge of French is required.
