Class Details
History of scientific traditions and ideas in Islamic civilization, from the origins of Islam to the contemporary period. Students will explore the ancient sources of science that were appropriated by Islamic thinkers, the development and significance of scientific ideas within Islam, and the interaction of science and religion. The transmission and influence of Islamic science on other cultural traditions and its importance for modern science will also be discussed. We will also examine the larger question of rationality within Islamic societies and religion, and how such questions have influenced modern political debates.
