Class Details
The seminar explores The Sublime in aesthetic theory and artistic practice. The approach will be topical, ranging across both Europe and America in the 18th and 19th centuries. Beyond readings in aesthetic theory, artists include Turner, Caspar David Friedrich, Thomas Cole and the Hudson River School. Some attention will also be given to the revival of the Sublime in 20th century art, including in the work of Barnett Newman and among contemporary artists.
