Class Details

Truancy, hikikomori (reclusion), otaku (manic obsessiveness), neet (willful disengagement), enjokôsai (dates for hire), parasite singles, working poor, low birth-rate, aging and senior care–these are some of the issues actively discussed and debated in contemporary Japanese society. This course explores ways in which these and other societal phenomena are depicted through literature, film, and other media, and thereby probes questions at the crossroads of popular/youth-culture, national identity, and the shifting narratives of minority and gender. All readings, discussions, films, and other media will be in English, or subtitled in English. Some materials may also be available in Japanese for those interested.
