Class Details

This course explores the persistent concern with forms of freedom and captivity in works ranging from William Bradford’s Of Plimouth Plantation to Will Smith’s remake of I Am Legend. Materials studied will include novels, slave narratives, captivity narratives, and feature films. We will look both at the ways different genres imagine freedom and captivity and will consider the politics of form. Above all, we will attend to how these narratives complicate the ordinary sense of what counts as bondage, and what as freedom.
