This is a course in applied social psychology. The purpose of the course is to explore issues related to the environment and environmentalism from a social psychological perspective. At the core of the course is an attempt to understand why people sometimes engage in environmentally destructive behaviors despite holding pro-environmental attitudes. We will also examine ways in which research and theory in social psychology may contribute insights to understanding (and encouraging) environmentally responsible action. Because human behavior plays such an important role in environmental problems, a consideration of human psychology is therefore an important part of the solution.
