Class Details

This course provides an introduction to the historical development of environmental policymaking in the United States, as well as key institutions and mechanisms in the policymaking process (scientific, economic and legal), and several current salient issues of environmental policy in the United States, including implementation of key U.S. environmental legislation and the implications of U.S. environmental policymaking for the global commons and the environment of other nations. Specific topics will include the respective roles of the executive, legislative and judicial branches in environmental policymaking, key federal environmental laws, and the role of environmental justice considerations in the policymaking process. The course also emphasizes skills development, including how to read judicial decisions and statutes, legal research, and public speaking.
