Class Details

This course looks at public policy in light of contemporary turns in policy studies–critical, ethical and interpretive. These turns emphasize the role of agency, meaning, power, justice and moral values in policy discourse, and are indispensable to understanding what policy is and how it works. They also emphasize that public policy is not simply what governments do, but is a discursive process involving governments, corporations, civil society and social movements intersecting at multiple scales. We shall examine some of the theories and methods of this approach, and explore their implications for public policies that impact the well-being of people, animals and nature.
