How long will the Sun shine, and what will happen when it stops? How do we detect and study Earth-like planets among the many circling other stars? How did the first instants of time determine the behavior of the Universe we now observe 13.8 billion years later? Astronomers grapple with questions like these. The Astronomy Department offers courses for anyone interested in learning about the Universe and new astronomical discoveries. All courses in Astronomy satisfy the Division III requirement. Most take advantage of our observational facilities including a 24-inch telescope with sensitive electronic detectors, and our own computer network for image processing and data analysis. We offer an Astrophysics major (jointly with Physics) and an Astronomy major. More information can be found on the Astronomy site.
