Class Details

This course explores the transmission of culture through close analysis of key works of literature in a variety of genres from antiquity to the present, each of which reflects upon its relationship to the tradition it inherits, affirms, questions, and transforms. Course texts explore such fundamental questions as: What is an author, and what is the nature of his or her authority? What is the relationship between a writer and his or her work? Between a writer and his or her readers? What is the nature of cultural influence and what is its relationship to originality? How do anxieties about cultural transmission inform conceptions of gender and how can one transmit or inherit a history of violation, abandonment, or disinheritance? Readings may include works by Virgil, Dante, Geoffrey of Monmouth, Chrétien de Troyes, Shakespeare, Marvell, Milton, M. Shelley, Keats, Melville, Poe, Woolf, and Morrison.
