Class Details
This course will explore both narrative and experimental structures, focusing on the relationship of power and narrative form in visual storytelling. The course will involve hands-on production, as well as screenings and readings that demonstrate elements of the medium. Through a variety of essays, films and web content the class will explore the intersection between art, narrative and technology. We will look at non-linear structures, branching narratives and the handling of time alongside the relationship of voice, style and memory. In response to case studies, students will create 3 short videos and complete several writing exercises. Examples of screenings include works by Jorgen Leth (and Lars von Trier), Mike Nichols, Bela Tarr, Abbas Klarostami, Rodrigo Garcia, Robert Altman, and Jane Campion.
