Class Details

This tutorial examines the application of population genetics, population ecology, community ecology, and systematic to the conservation of biological diversity. While the focus of this tutorial is on biological rather than social, legal, or political issues underlying conservation decisions, the context is to develop science-based recommendations that can inform policy. Topics include extinction, the genetics of small populations, habitat fragmentation, the impact of invasive species, restoration ecology, design of reserves and conservation strategies. Format; tutorial/field trip, one to three hours per week. Requirements: evaluation will be based on 5 writing assignments, tutorial presentation, performance in the role of paper critic, and course participation.
