Class Details
This course will survey American poetry from Whitman and Dickinson to the present, focusing on some of the major poetic movements of the 20th century (including Modernism, the New York School, the San Francisco Renaissance, Confessional and Language Poetry). We’ll read a few poets deeply, tracing both their inheritances and also the ways they each “make it new,” in Pound’s phrase. Along the way, we’ll ask what social, historical, and aesthetic pressures shape the poetry of the long 20th century, and will develop an account of ways these writers radically change poetry as a genre.
