Class Details
The Irish Literary Theatre was launched in 1899, offering brief seasons of work performed by amateurs. It aimed to provide a forum for distinctively Irish writing, to escape the constraints and conventions of London commercial drama, and to encourage artistic expression “outside” of political considerations (though all the while benefitting from the fact that British censorship laws did not apply in Ireland). By 1904 the Irish Literary Theatre had evolved into the Abbey Theatre, a year-round professional company; and this in turn eventually became Ireland’s National Theatre. This course will trace the evolution of modern Irish drama from these beginnings to the present day, with a core focus on work produced by the Abbey and its rivals. Readings will include plays by Yeats, Edward Martyn, J.M.Synge, Lady Gregory, Sean O’Casey, Lennox Robinson, Brendan Behan, John B. Keane, Brian Friel, Frank McGuinness, Martin McDonagh, Marina Carr, Enda Walsh, and Conor McPherson. We will consider production and reception histories, as well as the specific political and literary contexts in which these plays were written.
