Class Details

This course focuses on President Woodrow Wilson and his legacy in American foreign policy. Participants will gain a detailed understanding of Wilson’s diplomacy, historical and intellectual context, and influence on subsequent American statecraft up to the present. Specific policies such as the Mexican intervention, World War I entry, and the League of Nations will be discussed against the broader background of Wilson’s views on politics, religion, liberty, historical progress, and America’s manifest destiny. As the course unfolds, two questions will receive increasing attention: Does Wilson’s influence extend to contemporary U.S. foreign policy? Do his ideas constitute a solid foundation for future American statecraft?
