Class Details

We will be reading selections from Hesiod’s Theogony and Plato’s Republic, combined with grammar review. While the primary goal of this course is to develop fluency in reading Greek, we will also consider the literary and cultural significance of our texts, exploring issues such as archaic conceptions of the gods and cosmos, Greek poetic forms of expression, the transition from archaic to classical thought, and literature in the life of the polis.

Requirements/Evaluation: Evaluation will be based on classroom participation, quizzes, tests, and a final exam.
Prerequisites: CLGR 101-102 or two years of Greek in secondary school
