Class Details
Adam Smith has had enormous influence on the philosophy of economic life and on economic policy, especially in the English-speaking world. He was also surprisingly egalitarian, subtle, and occasionally witty. This course briefly surveys his most influential works. It concentrates on The Theory of Moral Sentiments and The Wealth of Nations, but will also include short selections from other writings, background reading about his biography and the world of the Scottish Enlightenment, and important contributions from the critical scholarly literature.
