The Program in Comparative Literature seeks to foster and develop its students’ critical faculties through the analysis of literature, broadly conceived, and through the exploration of literary and critical theories that have attempted to define what “literature” is and how it can be read. Before they consider how to read a book, students in Comparative Literature ask “what is a book?” In fact, they expand and critique the notion of text as they explore a wide range of texts from different national, linguistic, and historical traditions, in different genres and media, and across disciplinary boundaries. In the process, our students learn to read texts for the ways they make meaning, the assumptions that underlie those meanings, and the political and aesthetic elements evinced in the making.
