PSCI 264
Making America Great Again? The Trump Revolution at Home and Abroad Spring 2026
Division II W Writing Skills

Class Details

Few if any observers of American politics in 2012 would have anticipated the emergence of Donald Trump. His views on both domestic and foreign policy appeared to be hopelessly antiquated and far too dangerous to win elections in a democratic and liberal society. Trump’s victory in 2016 might have been dismissed as a fluke, but his most recent victory confirms that his ideas and popular appeal are deeply rooted in the American electorate. This tutorial explores the intellectual origins of the Trump revolution. First, we will examine the history of right-wing populism and the development of the Republican Party after 1945. Second, we will examine the foundations of the liberal order at home and abroad that Trump is seeking to overturn. Finally, we will examine specific policy issues that President Trump has emphasized from the beginning of his political career, including the severe restriction of immigration, opposition to measures designed to address climate change, and the promotion of isolationism, protectionism, and economic nationalism.
