ARTS 230
Drawing II Spring 2025
Division I

Class Details

A drawing can be anything: it can be made on paper, on cloth, on walls, on clay, on sand, in concrete, on film; with pencils, crayons, washes of ink, with watercolour, through collage, with time, like in animations. A drawing can be tiny or the size of a room. A drawing can be of anything! As soon as you draw something you create an imaginary world with its own concerns and rules and liberties. A drawing can look exactly like what’s in front of you, and it can also show you exactly what something feels like to you even if the shape, size, and contours are quite different from what you see. Drawing can be a way to dream. Building on skills learned in introductory drawing classes, in this intermediate course we will look at and practice a variety of traditional and experimental techniques though a series of short, thematic projects, and longer self-guided assignments. Classes will often begin with lectures on contemporary drawing practices, and mark-marking as seen in craft and design traditions internationally. After a brief break for breakfast, students will go to the drawing studio for an intensive and exciting session of drawing. Experimentation, play, and rigour are the heart of this class.
The Class: Format: studio; This studio is longer than usual to accommodate a more intensive style of teaching and learning. Students will have a break, timed with the dining hall's meal offerings, if they want to pause for a meal.
