Class Details

This course will provide you with tools and knowledge that you can use to repair and maintain your own or others’ bicycles. Working with a student grader at Mt. Greylock, you will repair and refit a donated bicycle so as to turn it into a functional machine that can be donated to someone in need of basic transportation. Demonstrations and explanations will be provided and the historical context of specific aspects of bicycle design will be covered, but the majority of the class time will be spent working with your partner, your tools, and the bicycle

Requirements/Evaluation: participation in all course sessions plus a presentation of the finished bicycle with explanation of maintenance
Extra Info: Meeting time: mornings plus one field trip each week
Extra Info 2: Paul Rinehart has extensive experience in bicycle maintenance and repair and has run his own bicycle shop, The Spoke, for 25 years. He has also served as race mechanic at events suc as Parish-Roubaix and the Tour of California
Prerequisites: none
Enrollment Preferences: If overenrolled, selection will be made based on an 1-page essay
Materials/Lab Fee: $75 for tools, text and materials
