Class Details

In the popular intuition of contemporary US culture, blackness and Asianness are often imagined as diametrically opposed. Yet the Asia/Pacific region has been crucial to the development of modern black culture since long before a Hawaii-born, Jakarta- and Honolulu-raised memoirist named Barack Obama was elected as the first African American president. In this tutorial, we’ll consider how blackness and Asianness came to be opposed to each other, while exploring the rich and complex history of African American interest in Asia and the Pacific that this obscures. Course materials will be drawn from over a century of critical and creative reflections on the subject, including novels, films, music, visual art, journalism, and scholarly writing. This tutorial fulfills the EDI requirement by examining how concepts of racial and cultural difference emerge from local and global histories of inequality and political contestation.
