Class Details

This course functions both as an introduction to screenwriting in general and as an introduction to the special requirements of adapting literature to the screen. The course will begin by introducing students to the fundamentals of film narrative, the art of visual storytelling, and the elements of dramatic writing for the screen. Students will develop narrative strategies for establishing structure, pacing, setting, characterization, and dialogue by studying model films and by their own writing exercises. Beyond this, students will be adapting a book or short story into a screenplay during the course of the semester, work shopping scenes in class and eventually writing a full adaptation, dealing with the problem of representing consciousness in images rather than in words, keeping in mind the ruthless principle that in order to serve a book, you often need to change the book.
