Class Details

This course is designed to provide senior concentrators the opportunity to reflect upon and synthesize both their curricular and experiential work in the concentration. In the first part of the course, students will lead discussion on readings addressing a range of issues and disciplines in the field of public health, including health inequities, cultural perspectives and global practices. In the second half of the semester, students will be divided into three or four multi-disciplinary research teams to investigate a contemporary real-life issue in public health, locally, nationally or internationally. The teams will work independently, in contact with the instructor and other resource faculty members, to define areas of investigation and approaches to the issue, gather data and other necessary information and prepare a team report. This report, to be presented at the end of the term, will be part of each student’s public health portfolio. In addition each student will write a separate 15-20 page term paper, drawing on the team project and/or the students’ prior coursework and experiential education in PH; this term paper will be designed to be a writing sample appropriate for graduate school or job applications. Some amount of off-campus travel may be required either in spring break or the latter half of the semester. The capstone course is required of all concentrators, but may be opened to other students with relevant experience at the discretion of the instructor and the advisory committee, if space permits.
