Class Details

Authoritarian states are plentiful in the world today. Some appear durable and resilient; they are not simply transient political failures awaiting a breakthrough to democracy. This course will consider the history and contemporary experience of authoritarianian states, beginning with political philsophical analyses of Aristotle, Montesquieu, Anderson, Moore, and Arendt. Attention then turns to how post-World War II authoritariansm has been understood from a variety of perspectives, including: the “transitions to democracy” approach; the “competitive authoritarian” view; and the “authoritarian relience” analysis, among others.

Requirements/Evaluation: 2-4 papers of 5-7 pages, several short oral presentations, daily discussion questions, 12-15 page final paper, class participation.
Prerequisites: Political science major or permission of instructor
